TQC Sheen Comprehensive Abrasion Test
Testing the Abrasion Resistance of Coatings on Flat Materials or Beverage Cans
TQC Comprehensive Abrasion Test Device is a versatile testing instrument designed to measure the abrasion resistance of coatings applied on beverage cans or flat materials. The piston-driven back-and-forth motion simulates abrasion damage during transportation, equivalent to the Gavarti Associates Gv-CAT system.
The TQC Comprehensive Abrasion Tester is commonly used in paint laboratories for quality control purposes.
WHY THIS ABRASION TEST?
Tin beverage cans are frequently exposed to wear and friction during transportation. Although not entirely impossible, selling food or beverage products with damaged packaging is highly challenging. Even a minor scratch may be enough to devalue the product.
If a coating (or ink) cannot withstand the scraping movements caused during transit, and bare aluminum rubs against another can’s exposed metal, leakage may start within minutes. In the case of carbonated beverages, this could result in liquid spilling over an entire shipment, potentially rendering a full pallet unusable.
The TQC Comprehensive Abrasion Tester simulates the movements of a truck or train during shipment and is also used to assess the abrasion resistance of printed cardboard boxes and book covers.
A printed sheet is clamped between polyurethane rubber blocks. Another sheet, either printed or plain, from the same stack is placed along with it. Hydraulic cylinders generate a lateral wave motion to simulate the vibrations during transport, pushing the blocks against each other. At the end of the test, the contact surfaces—printed-to-printed or printed-to-plain—are evaluated for abrasion damage.
Since coating failure may result from two different causes, the test should be conducted both by the paint manufacturer and by the can manufacturer / coating applicator.
