Escat 50

ESCAT 50 is a substituted imidazole catalyst masterbatched at 50% active level in castor wax. Masterbatching the catalyst in castor wax improves the compatibility during extrusion, which helps to assure its uniform distribution in a powder coating

ESCAT 50 is a substituted imidazole catalyst masterbatched at a 50% active level in castor wax. Masterbatching the catalyst in castor wax enhances compatibility during extrusion, thereby ensuring uniform distribution throughout the powder coating.

Application
ESCAT 50 is used in powder coating applications to accelerate the cure of systems based on the reaction between an epoxy-functional resin and a carboxyl-functional curing agent.

Typical systems include:

  • Epoxy/polyester hybrids
  • Epoxy/acrylic hybrids
  • TGIC/polyester systems Epoxy-functional acrylic/carboxyl-functional curing agent systems

It can also be used to accelerate the curing of epoxy systems crosslinked with dicyandiamide.

In typical formulations, ESCAT 50 shows a similar catalytic response to 2-propyl imidazole-based catalysts. The recommended usage level is 0.2–1.5% based on the binder content. The optimum catalyst concentration should be determined experimentally to achieve the desired cure time and coating performance.
