Taber Reciprocating Abraser
The TABER® Reciprocating Abraser is a test device similar to the one defined in the ISO 1518 test method.
Taber® Reciprocating “back-and-forth” Abraser is a testing device similar to the one defined in ISO 1518 test method. This device is ideal for flat surfaces. With optional attachments, the Taber® Reciprocating Abraser can be configured to measure the relative resistance or susceptibility of a material surface to physical damages such as wear, aging, scratching, gouging, rubbing, stripping, and scraping.
The Taber Reciprocating Abraser includes a rotating counterbalanced arm mounted on an adjustable height frame system. The counterbalance allows the user to balance the test arm—ensuring precise test load adjustment regardless of the attachment weight. At the end of the arm, there is a tool holder for fixing optional attachments and weights. Beneath the fixed tool holder, a sliding sample platform moves horizontally and reciprocally.
Test parameters—stroke length (6-155 mm), speed (3-75 cycles per minute), and load (1N – 24N maximum, including built-in weights of 1N, 2N, 2.5N, 5N, 10N & 24N)—are adjustable to optimize testing for all kinds of materials.
To extend the range of test loads, an optional weight support can be mounted on top of the tool holder. Thus, auxiliary weight discs designed for the original Taber Linear Abraser can be used instead of the standard weights supplied with the device.
The Wearaser® collection set, including CS-10 and H-18 Wearaser abrasives, is supplied with every Taber® Reciprocating Abraser. The Wearaser, similar in size and shape to a pencil eraser, is produced using high-quality Taber abrasive materials found in original Taber abrasion discs. This enables the use of the same abrasive materials in Reciprocating Abraser, Linear Abraser, and Rotary Abraser.
The standard sample table supplied with the Taber Reciprocating Abraser measures 216 mm x 278 mm (8.5″ x 11″) and has threaded holes to accommodate sample clamps or optional sample fixation plates. Most flat samples can be tested using sample clamps or the optional Wide Slot Fixation Plate. Flexible materials such as textiles may require the optional Sample Fixation Plate Kit. Slightly contoured products can be fixed using supplied clamps or special fixtures.
The Reciprocating Abraser can accommodate two additional test arm kits (sold separately), allowing simultaneous testing of three samples.
