Slot-Die Coating Technologies for Functional Materials

FOM Technologies is a Denmark-based technology company that develops advanced slot-die coating machines and equipment for the precise and scalable deposition of functional materials. Its systems support the development and commercialization of new materials, from laboratory research through to pilot-scale processing.

The company name FOM stands for “Future of Materials”, reflecting its commitment to supporting research, development and commercialization within the field of advanced materials science.

From Laboratory Research to Pilot-Scale Coating

FOM Technologies develops sheet-based, roll-based and roll-to-roll slot-die coating systems, as well as steel and PEEK slot-die heads. Its product portfolio covers different stages of application, from early-stage material research and process development to automated, repeatable coating and pilot-scale production.

Slot-die coating enables coating solutions to be applied under controlled conditions, supporting uniform film formation, efficient material usage and the repeatable evaluation of process parameters. FOM systems are used in applications including battery electrodes, solar cells, fuel cells, electrolyzers, medical and pharmaceutical products, and other functional thin-film technologies.

Since 2012

FOM Technologies originated from the machinery activities associated with roll-to-roll materials research at Risø, part of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and was established as an independent company in 2012.

During its early years, the company developed an international customer base and formed a strategic partnership with the Clean Energy Institute at the University of Washington. In 2017–2018, FOM Technologies strengthened its focus on becoming a leading provider of slot-die coating technologies for emerging functional materials. The company subsequently expanded its operations in Europe and the United States, establishing its US organization in Seattle and FOM Technologies AB in Helsingborg, Sweden, in 2024.

Precise, Repeatable and Scalable Coating

FOM Technologies designs its systems to enable coating parameters established during research to be applied under controlled and repeatable conditions. Product options with different levels of automation and coating formats allow users to select a system suited to their materials, substrates, coating widths and process requirements.

Its range of sheet, roll and roll-to-roll platforms supports the transition of coating processes from laboratory research to pilot scale. Modular systems, slot-die heads and application-specific auxiliary equipment provide additional flexibility for material research and process development.
